At The Bulmershe School, we are committed to providing our students with experiences that widen their view of the world and challenge them to step outside their comfort zones. This month, two of our school bands travelled to London to participate in the Music for Youth regional festival, held at the prestigious BIMM London.

Performance in a Professional Environment

One of the key aims of our Performing Arts department is to bridge the gap between classroom practice and professional industry standards. Performing at a venue like BIMM London, a world-renowned contemporary music college, offered our students a glimpse into the life of a working musician. From the technical soundcheck to performing under professional lighting, the environment helped spark a new level of ambition in our young performers.

The Mystics: A Debut to Remember

The trip was a significant milestone for our Year 11 band, The Mystics. Composed of Nate, Thomas, Evan, Ben and Arthur, the group was performing together for the very first time. For Nate, the stakes were particularly high as it marked his debut as a lead vocalist in front of a live audience.

The band delivered a set full of energy and determination. The festival judges noted the group's natural charisma and were impressed by the confidence they displayed during their first ever public appearance. It was a proud moment for the school to see these students support one another through the nerves of a debut performance.

The BullFrogs: Technical Precision

Our second group, The BullFrogs, consists of A-Level Music students Holly, Alex, Carlitto and Arthur. They chose to perform "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder, a track famous for its complex arrangements and demanding brass-style riffs.

The judges specifically commented on the high level of technical difficulty involved in the piece. They were particularly impressed by the band's ability to keep the iconic instrumental sections "tight" and perfectly in time. This level of precision is a testament to the hours of practice these students have put in during their lunchtime and after-school sessions.

Building a Musical Community

Beyond the music itself, the trip was about community and inspiration. Our students spent the day cheering on other school groups from across the region, fostering a supportive atmosphere that is central to the Bulmershe ethos.

The journey home was filled with discussions about future gigs, song choices and upcoming rehearsals. By providing these professional platforms, we aim to show our students that their talents have a place in the wider world. We are very proud of both bands for their professionalism and the way they represented the school in London.
